When FedEx—one of the world’s most trusted and recognized brands for business services—and EMBARQ—a global network of experts on sustainable transport—began their collaboration in 2010, it was because of one common and clear vision. Urban areas with excellent public transport require fewer cars on the road, making streets safer, the air cleaner, and commutes and deliveries faster. Both EMBARQ and FedEx recognized early on that the business of moving people is remarkably similar to the business of moving packages, and that both organizations stand to learn from one another.
The resulting collaboration was crystallized in the Mobility and Accessibility Program (MAP). MAP’s strategy is to leverage FedEx’s extensive know-how in issues such as vehicle asset management, telematics, fuels and vehicles technology, branding and marketing, and driver safety in order to accelerate EMBARQ’s ability to help cities create mobility and access to marketplaces, jobs, schools, and community in ways that minimize environmental impacts.
MAP represents a model for corporate social responsibility based on shared values and high-skilled employee engagement. Cities in developing countries largely lack the capacity, knowledge, and tools to make informed decisions to improve mobility. The involvement of highly skilled volunteers from FedEx accelerates the pace at which EMBARQ can disseminate knowledge and build the much needed capacity for cities to design and implement sustainable transport solutions. The result is a program that leverages the capabilities of both FedEx and EMBARQ to rapidly deploy efficient and sustainable solutions for people to take advantage of all of the opportunities their cities have to offer.
